Costume Designer and Design Assistant can work a flexible schedule until tech
Compensation: $500 per session / $1,000 total
Position Overview:
The Costume Designer is responsible for creating and overseeing all costume elements for The Spongebob Musical: Youth Edition. This role involved designing imaginative, colorful, and character-driven costumes that reflect the playful underwater world of Bikini Bottom while remaining practical for a youth cast. The designer will collaborate closely with the director and design assistant to ensure costumes enhance storytelling, movement, and overall visual impact.
Responsibilities:
Develop a cohesive costume design concept aligned with the director’s vision and the show’s vibrant, whimsical style
Research and sketch costume ideas for principal and ensemble characters
Source, build, alter, or coordinate costumes within the production budget
Ensure costumes are age-appropriate, comfortable, and allow for ease of movement and quick changes
Organize and lead costume fittings with cast members
Coordinate with hair/makeup (if applicable) for a unified look
Supervise costume assistants and/or volunteers
Maintain costume inventory, including tracking, labeling, and storage
Oversee costume care during the run (repairs, cleaning, and organization)
Attend production meetings, rehearsals (as needed), and all dress rehearsals
Qualifications:
Experience in costume design, theater production, or related field (educational or community theater experience welcome)
Creativity and ability to translate abstract or cartoon-inspired characters into wearable designs
Basic sewing and garment construction skills (hand and/or machine)
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team, including youth performers
Flexibility, problem-solving skills, and a positive attitude
